As the use of smartphones and laptops has increased in New Normal, it is important to ensure that there are no side effects on health.
Thus, for a long time now, we have become addicted to smartphones. That means you have a phone in your hand even when you are watching TV. After the lockdown and the subsequent online teaching and work-from-home, everyone from students to family has found reasons (or excuses!) To spend more time on a smartphone or computer / laptop.
Excessive use of a smartphone or computer can have many side effects. For the sake of this article, let's focus on the physical side effects and remedies derived by experts:
If you want to use the smartphone for a long time, use the stand instead of holding it in your hand. The radiation and heat of the smartphone is definitely harmful. If you need to communicate more in the phone, make it a habit to use wired earphones. Of course this will prevent radiation from the phone but there will be a possibility of ear infection! If you have to have long conversations on the phone for work, it is essential to balance the work with the speaker of the phone instead of earphones to listen to music.
Anyone is tempted to multitask while working with both laptops and smartphones at the desk. That means more work is being done on the laptop than talking on the phone by pressing the smartphone between the ear and the shoulder. This habit has definite and serious harm in the long run. As a solution to this, if you make it a habit to get up from the desk whenever the phone rings, life will be saved from being completely sedentary. Whether it is a laptop or a smartphone, the habit of taking short breaks every twenty minutes can prevent long term damage.
Use the stand when you want to type anything in the phone or type by placing it on the phone desk. If this is not possible, hold the phone in one hand and type in the other. Holding the phone with one hand and typing with the same hand can cause internal injury to the wrist in the long run. Use the tip instead of the tip of the thumb when typing. When using the phone for a long time, try to keep it at your chest or arm level. There are definite disadvantages to using a smartphone with a constant neck bend.
There are many types of workouts that can be done on a desk rather than working with a smartphone or laptop. Instead of taking a table-chair for work-from-home, take a small foldable desk that can be placed on the ground. Frequent getting up will give boredom but the damage caused by lack of exercise can be compensated in this way. Standing workstations have now arrived in many offices abroad and even in India. At home, even if you have a table-chair, if you put an extra folding desk on the table, keep the laptop or smartphone at the right height and make it a habit to work standing up, it will obviously be fun and you will get health benefits, try it!
When attending a meeting or class and not typing anything yourself and not paying attention to the screen when the video is on, light exercises like bending-stretching of fingers and hands, neck or body will also benefit.
We have now turned to the new normal, while cultivating new habits, if we take small care in the use of smartphones / laptops, we will be able to avoid losses and also gain.
