Disenchanted with electric cars, more dangerous than petrol-diesel, IIT study reveals

In today's time, people are choosing electric vehicles a lot. Also, it is heavily subsidized and promoted by the government. It is seen as an option to reduce dependence on petrol-diesel and other conventional fuels and control air pollution but according to a recent study the situation is quite the opposite.
Shocking revelation of IIT Kanpur study
A study by IIT Kanpur has revealed that electric vehicles are causing more damage to the environment. According to this study, battery electric cars emit 15-50% more greenhouse gases than other vehicles.
IIT Kanpur studied in association with a Japanese institute
IIT Kanpur has conducted this study with the help of a Japanese institute. In this study vehicles were divided into 3 categories.
- Traditional car
- Electric car
- Hybrid car
Life cycle analysis and total cost of ownership were calculated for all three types of vehicles. The IIT Kanpur study challenges the claim that electric cars are more environmentally friendly than hybrid cars and conventional internal combustion engine cars.
What did the study reveal?
According to a study report by IIT Kanpur's Engine Research Lab, the production, use and scrapping of electric cars produces 15 to 50% more greenhouse gases than hybrid and conventional engine cars. Battery electric cars emit 15-50% more greenhouse gases in different categories compared to other vehicles, according to a study led by Professor Avinash Agarwal. This IIT Kanpur study, after analyzing vehicles per kilometer, found that electric vehicles are also 15-60% more expensive to run, maintain and insure.
Hybrid electric car environment friendly
The study also revealed that hybrid electric cars are environmentally friendly. A hybrid car gets one and a half to two times the mileage per liter as compared to a car with a conventional engine.
Charging from electricity, electricity from coal!
The study said, 'Battery electric vehicles have to be charged with electricity, while currently 75% of electricity in the country is generated from coal and this coal emits carbon-dioxide. Battery cars cost 15-60% more per km to buy, operate and maintain compared to hybrid and conventional cars.
Hybrid cars should be encouraged by the government
Hybrid electric vehicles emit the least amount of greenhouse gases compared to the other two categories of vehicles, but are slightly more expensive than the other two categories of cars. One of the reasons behind the high price of hybrid cars is the high tax levied on them by the government.
