- Forgot your bank account or deposit ? Now it will be easier to find!
Have you ever had a savings or current account with Cobank that was two or more years old and completely forgot about it? Or has it happened that you opened a term deposit and did not set it to renew automatically after its maturity and you forgot to cross it? This happens to many people. In such case, when there is no transaction from the account holder or deposit holder for two years or more, the bank suspends the account after sending instructions to the account holder. After the bank account or term deposit account remains 'inoperative' for 10 years, it is transferred as unclaimed deposit to the 'Depositors Education and Awareness Fund' of the Reserve Bank of India. You will be surprised to know that as of February 2023, the number of unclaimed deposits reaching this fund from all public sector banks has reached 35 thousand crores! We can get this amount back.
Now Reserve Bank of India is preparing to launch an online portal. With the help of which unclaimed deposits in various banks can be searched. At present, we have to check the website of that bank to check if any amount is lying unclaimed in any bank of oneself or any relative of the family. It is fine if we don't remember the account number, but the account holder's name, address, date of birth or PAN number etc. details have to be given. The problem now is that if you don't know whether there is an unclaimed deposit or not, which bank should you go to check? The new centralized portal of Reserve Bank will make the whole thing much easier. This portal will prove to be a boon especially when a close relative dies and other family members do not have enough knowledge about which bank accounts they have opened.
