Indian computers will now be ruled by indigenous operating systems, the magic of 'MAYA' will cover the Navy, Army and other forces.
The Ministry of Defense has developed MAYA os with the help of various government agencies including Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and National Informatics Center (NIC). It is free and more secure. The Indian government is considering replacing the Windows operating system on computers used in the Ministry of Defense with a new indigenous operating system called Maya OS.
What is Maya?
MAYA os is a new operating system based on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a popular Linux distribution that uses free and open source software. Keeping up with new operating system (OS) is also a challenge for the government but the ministry claimed that MAYA OS was introduced to thwart cyber threats and reduce dependence on OS made by global tech companies like Microsoft. MAYA OS is free, so the government will no longer need to own a genuine Windows license or pay for expensive Microsoft Word and other services.
Safe from cyber threats
Cybercriminals create malware and viruses for any popular platform. The platform's popularity helps malware spread quickly. Since Windows is used by the majority of PC users worldwide, it is a primary target of hackers. Another aspect to consider is that, when data is exchanged via email, USB pen drive, portable hard drive, router or any other end device or platform, hackers usually transmit the Windows payload.
PDF embedded Windows malware on PCs with MAYA OS
Now, when Windows malware is transmitted to a PC running MAYA OS, the malware will essentially have no effect. Emails containing malware encoded PDFs, JPEGs, Excel sheets and documents are commonly seen as primary entry points for hackers. So, if a government official downloads an important PDF file through email without knowing that the PDF has embedded Windows malware on a PC with MAYA OS.
Antivirus cycle
Another layer of protection is the 'cycle', which is an in-house anti-virus and isolates data. Chakravyuh only comes with MAYA OS. The government is planning to deploy MAYA OS by the end of the year. But what is the origin of MAYA OS, what features will it offer and will popular applications work on the new operating system? Today we will know about it.
MAYA- Native OS
MAYA OS has been 'developed' by the Ministry of Defence, will arrive by the end of the year and will be used by the Army, Navy and other forces. The ministry claims that Maya OS is based on the open source Ubuntu platform, a distribution of the Linux operating system.
MAYA OS cheap
The reason for developing derivatives of Ubuntu is simple. It allows users to customize preferences while allowing access to Ubuntu applications. Also for peripherals like keyboard, mouse, printer, etc., it is easy to find drivers that support Ubuntu. Maya OS generates another Ubuntu with access to free popular Ubuntu applications. The Ubuntu App Store offers free alternatives to Microsoft Word, Photoshop, Browser, etc. This will drastically reduce software licensing costs for the government. Apart from Apple's macOS and Microsoft's Windows, Linux distributions are the most popular operating systems used globally for various purposes. In fact, even Windows is 'heavily inspired' by Linux.
Working OS was developed in six months
The Ministry has designed the platform with an interface and functionality aimed at thwarting any potential cyber threat from bad elements. Reportedly, the OS was developed in six months with the help of a dedicated team from agencies like DRDO, Development Center for Advanced Computing (C-DAC), and National Informatics Center (NIC).
What does the name mean?
The name MAYA OS is derived from the Hindi word illusion. It is said that the name MAYA reflects the idea of hackers who face confusion when trying to break into Defense Ministry systems. The OS gets a layer of protection in the form of Chakravyuh which is an anti-malware and antivirus version for MAYA OS, which does not allow malware to enter.
MAYA OS - More secure than Microsoft Windows
The Ubuntu-based Maya OS has a Windows-like UI, which makes it easy for users to understand, as they already know the features and functions of the OS. Additionally, Maya OS also supports cloud storage, biometric authentication and digital signature.
