Corona virus R0: Learn what the R number is and why it is important

Britain, Ta. May 2, 2020, Saturday

The R number of the corona virus is taken into consideration in many countries to determine whether to open a lockdown. But it is very important to know what this R number is and why R number is being discussed to prevent the transmission of Corona virus. R stands for 'Effective Reproduction Number'. It is an indicator of how many other people are being infected by an average infected person.

If R is number 2 then one infected person will infect two new person and both infected person will infect 2-2 other person. Four infected people will then infect 2-2 new people and thus the transmission of the virus will take a very large form. Because of this, the risk of corona infection is greatly increased if the coronavirus in a country has a R number greater than 1. But if the Corona virus's R number is less than 1, the epidemic will gradually decrease.

Corona virus was between R number 2 and 3 in the early days of the epidemic but R number is not the same in all cities of a country. The reason why the reproduction number i.e. R number is not fixed depends on the structure of the virus, the behavior of the people, social distance etc. Also how many people in the population are immune also affects the R number.

In the early days of the epidemic, scientists used the 'Basic Reproductive Number' R0. R0 means that the immunity of the population is zero. R number is declining due to lockdown. In Britain, the R number has dropped from 0.6 to 0.9 since the lockdown, meaning the epidemic is declining.

However, it has not yet been decided at the international level how many R number lockdowns can be ended. Also, there is no specific information on how much the R number can be changed by allowing a lockdown.
