This machine is even more effective than a ventilator in the corona virus epidemic
New York, April 29, 2020, Thursday
Efforts to find a vaccine to treat the corona virus are in full swing, with ventilators being the most talked about in medical devices these days because the ventilator comes in handy when a corona patient has difficulty breathing. Patients with a very serious and delicate condition have more time to fight infection but one study found that a machine that increases the amount of oxygen in the blood may prove important for the treatment of a corona patient. This is according to research conducted at several West Virginia University hospitals. This experiment involving extraporous membrane oxygenation was performed on 32 patients. The study found that 17 out of 32 people benefited from the machine in 24 days.
This machine is used during heart and lung disease. It works to deliver oxygen to the body at such times so that the lungs and heart get rest. The study also found that there was no benefit in the rest of the treatment but now it has been found that the use of the machine can give a good amount of life. The machine was previously used to treat patients stranded on the Diamond Princess ship in Yokohama.
This machine cannot be used in every hospital as it is very expensive but can be given to the patient in place of ventilator when life and death is in question. However this machine cannot replace the ventilator. It is worth noting that corona is also useful in the treatment of non-ventilator. About 220 coronavirus patients in North America and 83 in Europe have been cured using this machine. The experiment was performed on 32 patients in 9 hospitals, according to data published in the Journal of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organ. Out of 24 patients, 4 out of 5 were given steroids while 3 were given antiviral medication and one was given hydrochloroquine. Using this machine gives 3 times more sticky result compared to ventilator.
