Second spaceport to be set up at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu: Kulasekarapattinam is a coastal city in Tamil Nadu. It is in the famous Thoothukudi district. Which was earlier known as Tuticorin. Tuticorin known for pearls will now also be known for rocket launches. Now small rockets like ASLV and SSLV will be launched from here. Private rocket launches will also be arranged.

This spaceport will be built on 2000 acres of land. PM Modi will lay its foundation stone on 28 February 2024. The project will promote science and technology in the state of Tamil Nadu. Sriharikota has two launch pads. Apart from this, a separate temporary launch pad will have to be constructed for all launches. Or one of the two has to be used.

Portuguese attack on Thoothukudi

Thoothukudi which is located on the edge of the country on the Coromandel coast, next to the Bay of Bengal and above Sri Lanka, was formerly called Thoothikoreen. Tuticorin Port is one of the major ports of India. It is about 600 km from Chennai, 190 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Dussehra in Thoothukudi is very famous after Mysore. Dussehra is celebrated here for 12 days. Also, since pearls were traded here, the Portuguese attacked Thoothukudi in 1548 and then the Dutch came in 1658.

Salt cultivation in Thoothukudi

Finally in 1825 the British rulers established an empire on Tuticorin. The modern construction of Tuticorin port started in 1842. A large amount of salt is cultivated in Thoothukudi. The highest demand for salt here is in the chemical industries. 1.2 million tonnes of salt is produced here every year.
