For the first time ever, a Prime Minister visited an ISRO centre, meeting the four astronauts of the Gaganyaan mission


PM Modi in VSSC: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), the largest and most important center of ISRO located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He is the first Prime Minister of the country, who has visited this important center of the country. He has inaugurated the trisonic wind tunnel project at this centre. In addition, Satish Dhawan also inaugurated the PSLV Integration Facility (PIF) at the Space Center and the new Semi-Cryogenics Integrated Engine and Stage Test Facility at the ISRO Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri. These three projects are worth 1800 crore rupees. It may be mentioned that all the three facilities are being upgraded to provide world class facilities in the space sector.

These benefits will come from the new rocket and engine facility

With the commissioning of the PSLV Integration Facility (PIF) at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, 15 PSLV rockets can now be launched in a year. Whereas earlier it had the capacity to launch only six rockets. Apart from this, PIF state-of-the-art facilities will also help launch SSLV rockets and other small rockets designed by private space companies. The new 'Semi-Cryogenic Integrated Engine and Stage Test Facility' at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri will enable the development of semi-cryogenic engines and associated stages.

IPCR will increase the payload capacity of existing launch rockets with the help of this new facility. The facility is equipped with liquid oxygen and kerosene supply systems for testing engines of up to 200 tonnes capacity.

An important center of ISRO- Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre

Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) is the largest and most important center of ISRO. It is in Thiruvananthapuram. Here rockets, launch vehicles and artificial satellites are manufactured and related technologies are developed and assembled. The center started in 1962 as Themba Equatorial Rocket Launch Centre. Later the center was named after the father of Indian space program Dr. Named after Vikram Sarabhai.

What is the Gaganyaan Mission?

Mission Gaganyaan is India's ambitious space mission, which aims to send three astronauts into Earth orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometers in 2025 and bring them back safely. The mission will be managed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Pre-mission preparation

Before the actual space flight, several practice missions will be conducted to ensure that all the technologies are working properly. These practice missions include Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT), Pad Abort Test (PAT), Test Vehicle (TV) flights.

Why Gaganyan mission is special for India?

The Gaganyaan mission, which carries astronauts into space, is special for India in many ways. Initially, it was supposed to be launched in 2022 but due to Corona and the complexity of the mission, it got delayed. If the mission is successful in 2025, India will become the fourth country to send a manned spacecraft after the US, China and Russia.

Astronauts of the Gaganyaan mission

The names of four Gaganyaan astronauts have come out. It includes Prashant Nair, Angad Pratap, Ajith Krishnan and Shubhanshu Shukla. All four are test pilots of the Indian Air Force. Also he has flown all types of fighter jets of the country and is familiar with their features and shortcomings. Hence, these four are selected for Gaganyaan astronaut training. He has been trained in Russia. All four are currently undergoing training at the Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru.
