Easy cleaning of OTP messages.

How many times do you receive SMS containing one time password (OTP) on your smartphone every day? We also receive OTPs for logging into bank sites, making transactions from apps, logging into sites that have two-factor authentication enabled, or delivering items ordered on shopping sites to ensure that the delivery is being made to the correct person.

Thus, OTP messages are being hacked from many places in our smartphones every day. Nowadays, we hardly use messaging apps except reading SMS, so we don't pay much attention to the OTP messages stored in it. The size of such messages is very small, on the contrary, the storage space available in the phone is much more, so if we do not delete the useless messages regularly, but if the amount of such messages increases too much, it can increase the load on the overall system of the phone.

Remedy in Android

Fortunately, various SMS messaging apps allow us to automatically delete unnecessary messages. If the app on your phone doesn't offer such a facility, Google's messaging app has added such a facility since last year. To take advantage of it, you have to install this app in the phone (Messages by Google, Google LLC) and make it the default messaging app. For that, install the Google Messages app in the phone. Then when you open it, you will see a suggestion to set it as default SMS app, say yes.

Now in this app, click on the account profile picture on the top right and go to the settings of messages. In the Messages Organization section, you will find an option to automatically delete OTP messages sent to us after 24 hours, turn it on.

OTPs sent to us are valid only for a fixed time limit. So there is no point in keeping it in the messaging app. Also, in terms of other features too, Google Messages app has better features than other SMS apps on the phone.

Remedy in iPhone

If your iPhone has iOS 17 operating system, it has a feature for us to automatically delete unnecessary OTP messages and emails. To avail it go to 'Password' in Settings app in iPhone. In it go to 'Password Options', here under 'Verification Codes' turn on 'Cleanup Automatically' option. Now whenever you enter the verification code anywhere using the iPhone's auto fill feature, the message or email containing the code will be deleted immediately.
