A well-known 'gambler' example of changing identities in the tech world

Backrub > Google > Alphabet

Before the birth of 'Google', its search engine was called 'Backrub'. The reason? Search engines used 'back links'. As that name did not sound good, the name 'Googol' was thought of. Meaning 1 digit behind 100 zeros. While checking whether the domain name is available or not, it mistakenly wrote google.com. Then everyone liked the same name. As the name stuck in our minds, the company changed its name again - Alphabet. The reason for this name? Founder Larry Page said, "The alphabet is a set of letters, language, the most important invention of mankind!" Google also constantly changes the names of its various services.

Apple Computers > Apple

Steve Jobs, two friends (one of whom initially left the company billions in future revenue!) founded Apple Computers in 1976. The focus then was on the Apple 1 personal computer. After the ups and downs of the company in the following years and the departure of Steve Jobs, the company launched the iPhone in 2007. Steve Jobs then announced that 'Apple Computers Incorporation' would now be known as 'Apple Incorporation' as the company was now focusing on different types of consumer electronic devices instead of computers. Apple is now the most valuable company!

Facebook > Meta

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who has dominated social media since its founding in 2004, is quick to recognize the changing times. He bought the more popular Instagram and WhatsApp companies on mobile to expand the desktop-focused Facebook for years. He then dreamed of an even bigger dream - the dream of gifting the world with 'Metaverse'. In 2021, he changed the name of the entire company to 'Meta'. The company's focus now is to build technology that 'helps people connect, find communities and grow businesses'. For now, however, the Metaverse is still a dream.

Research in Motion > Blackberry

While the name 'Research in Motion' (RIM) was good for a mobile company, the company was looking for a new name for its new product. At a time when people were still using pagers, the RIM company developed a mobile phone with a computer-like keyboard. Someone guessed the name 'Blackberry' from the fruit-like shape of all the keys on the mobile. At that time, the phone became very popular among top business executives. Then the entire company was renamed to BlackBerry. Of course, the company's mobile business has been swept away by the storm of iPhone and Android.

Confinity>X.com>PayPal

In 1998, a company called 'Confinity' was founded, which later merged with X.com, a company founded at the time by Elon Musk, the current owner of Twitter (Elon Musk's 'Express' is very old!). The business of the company was financial services. Together these two companies launched an online payment service called 'PayPal'. After a long ups and downs, the company got its official identity as 'PayPal'. The IPO of the company also came in the same name. Later, eBay bought PayPal. Currently, PayPal is the most popular online payment service worldwide.

McAfee > Intel Sequoi. >

'McAfee' is the surname of the founder of the company we all know as antivirus software. The company was established in 1987. Founder John McAfee left the company in 1994 and became an outspoken opponent of the company, but the company continued to grow. In 2010, Intel Company bought McAfee and renamed the company 'Intel Security' in 2014. Change happened again in 2017. Intel sold the security business and the new company got the old name - McAfee! Meanwhile, original founder John McAfee went to prison for tax evasion and died in prison in 2021. Whether it was suicide or murder is still a mystery.

HBO Max > Max

Home Box Office - HBO! We used to know this world famous TV channel as 'Hollywood Box Office'. The aim of the company was to present sports, movies, events, TV shows etc. through cable. However, the old name of the company before HBO was 'Green Channel'. The company was launched in 1972. HBO adopted a subscription model so it didn't care about advertisers. In 2019, the company added the word 'Max' to its name from sister company 'Cinemax' and now in May this year, the original word 'HBO' was dropped from the company name. Now he is known only as 'Max'.

Netflix > Streamberry >

Netflix is not far behind when it comes to name changes. Last month, Netflix company announced that the new name of the company is now 'Streamberry'. People were confused. Then it was revealed that the company had done this stunt to promote the sixth season of its popular series called 'Black Mirror'. The series is about 'Streamberry', a fictional streaming platform similar to Netflix. The company launched a new logo, a new website on various social channels during this 'change'. It will be surprising to know that the original name of the company launched in 1997 as 'Netflix' by combining the internet's 'Net' and 'Flix' i.e. film was 'Kibble'!
