Top 10 emerging technologies that will impact our future

The World Economic Forum released its 'Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2023' report on June 26, which congregates the mindsets of over 90 academics, industry leaders, and futurists from 20 countries around the world, to uncover the technologies most likely to impact the world. in the next three to five years.

From combating climate crisis to generative artificial intelligence (AI) models, mentioned below are the top 10 emerging technologies in four different sectors, most likely to improve our future:

Fighting climate crisis

Sustainable aviation fuel: Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will move the aviation industry towards net-zero carbon emissions. Today, SAFs meet around 1% of aviation industry fuel demand, but this will increase to 13-15% by the year 2040.

Wearable plant sensors: A device for monitoring crops. According to the UN, global food production will need to increase by 70% by 2050 to feed the growing world population. These devices will assist in monitoring temperature, humidity, moisture and nutrient levels to help in improving crop yields and detect early signs of disease.

Sustainable computing: With the exponential technology growth, more data center capacity is needed which consumes global electricity production. Sustainable computing aims to utilize digital resources in such a manner that there is net zero impact on the environment.

AI-powered technologies

Generative artificial intelligence (AI): The fast-growing AI is far more than penned texts, images and sound. AI applications are now in use to design drugs for specific medical conditions, architecture and engineering. NASA is also developing AI systems to create lightweight space instruments, reducing development time.

AI-facilitated healthcare: Emerging AI-based technologies and machine learning tools could help the global healthcare sector which often lacks sufficient infrastructure and staff to provide widespread access to healthcare services.

Healthcare technologies

Metaverse for mental health: Virtual world will open up digital space for people to share the same platform to provide mental health treatments.

Designer phages: Phages are viruses that help to identify and infect specific types of bacteria with genetic information for treatment. Phage's genetic details can be reprogrammed for changing the instructions it transmits to the bacteria.

Spatial omics: Spatial omics is a method that scientists can use to observe details of cells and biological processes that were previously unobservable, this will help in mapping biological processes at the molecular level.

Engineering

Flexible batteries: With an increasing number of portable and compact electronic devices, a more flexible type of battery is emerging to power them. Flexible batteries are made of lightweight, twisty and stretchy materials that can even be coated onto carbon fiber or cloth. According to the report, these rechargeable bendable batteries can support computer screens, smart clothing and wearable electronics.

Flexible neural electronics: Brain-machine interfaces (BMI) allow direct communication between the brain and external electronic devices. BMI-type technologies are used to cure patients with prosthetics that use electrodes to connect with the nervous system.
