During this vacation , where did you go on tour ? If not now, then you must have gone for a walk. At that point , after arriving at your hotel , freshened up, you'd be doing something similar when you head out for sight-seeing - locking the hotel room , pocketing the key (or keyless card) and leaving, or handing it over at the reception.

If the hotel is good, after we leave , the cleaning staff of the hotel will clean our room as they have our room key or master key.

Now suppose a thief , who can somehow get his hands on the hotel reception and get our keys , can also clean our room - differently!

This happens in almost all types of online accounts.

As we have the key of the account lock i.e. the password , the system (think reception!) of the account also has the same key. If a key-password is stolen not from us , but from the system, it can penetrate into our account. That is why now it has become necessary to consider additional security in addition to password.

How can such a situation be faced ?

Tech companies are now valuing biometrics to counter such situations. If we have our fingerprint or face ID etc. with us and stay only in our mobile or computer, there is no possibility of it being stolen. Apart from us, Sisyam has nothing, otherwise why steal ?

When we store our data in various online services, such companies also provide ' zero knowledge ' security to save the data more safely.

A copy of the password we set in a service that does not use zero-knowledge security remains in the service's system. But in zero knowledge type of service or system we do not keep a copy of our own password in the system.

How is zero knowledge safer ?

Most services store users' passwords in an encrypted format , so that anyone can't read them , but some time ago it was revealed that even well-known companies stored many users' passwords in plain text. Such a defect becomes more serious when the online account is for storage of important files.

As a solution to this, a system called Zero Knowledge Storage has evolved! In which the service has zero knowledge about the password of the account in that service, i.e. it has no knowledge at all.

Taking the hotel room example further , in addition to the hotel lock , we can also put our own , old and well-known lock (like a hotel room!) on the door of the room , then the hotel does not have a copy of it, so there is no question of stealing our key from the reception.

Exactly this concept is adopted in zero knowledge storage services. After opening an account in it , instead of giving the password to enter , we somehow just have to prove that we know the password.

Technically , it is not as easy as written here , it is very complicated , but the point is that if there is no copy of the password, hackers or the government - no one can get the data in our account from that service because the data itself is encrypted and that is the key to the lock. Only we have!

Of course , if we forget the password in such a service, we have to forget our data forever. Zero-Knowledge Storage is also slower than other simple cloud storage services. However , if you are interested in storing your data physically , online, check out the various services and their features listed below - all of them have free plans as well.
