WhatsApp is very popular in India and therefore very dangerous! One of the reasons for the increase in risk is also the fact that there is a large proportion of elders among the WhatsApp users in India , who do not know anything about the security settings of this app , but are able to forward messages directly or in groups! Similarly, no one can stop them from clicking on the links in WhatsApp!
Where else can thugs find such a fertile ground ? However, now WhatsApp has added a UPI based payment system (which has not been very popular) , due to which there are constant attempts to cheat people in WhatsApp in one way or another. For the past one month, the number of calls received by Indian users on WhatsApp has increased so much that the Meta company and the Indian government also had to take note of it. In this case, let's know a little about the safety in WhatsApp.

WhatsApp users in India have been facing a new problem for some time now. Sharing their experiences on social platforms like Twitter, users write that they are seeing a rise in the number of calls coming from international numbers on WhatsApp!
In particular, the number of calls starting with international codes like +84 (Vietnam) , +62 (Indonesia) , +251 (Ethiopia) etc. is increasing. It is obvious that if the number is completely unknown and WhatsApp calls are received frequently from it, people get confused and scared. Some people experience that they have to face two-four such calls every alternate day.
In most of these phone calls , if the call is received, the person on the other end often makes completely fake job offers or sends a link , asking them to click on it and receive benefits. It is also suggested to connect to other messaging apps like Telegram.

Meta Company, the owner of WhatsApp, has also taken this problem seriously in WhatsApp targeting Indian users in particular. The company has already strengthened its artificial intelligence and machine learning based system to block spam calls from unknown numbers. According to the company, the WhatsApp app has the facility to block and report messages or calls from unknown numbers. Apart from this, the company is trying to reduce spam calls with the help of latest technology. The changes the company has now made to its system are expected to cut the volume of spam calls in half.
The Government of India has also issued a notice to the company Meta to curb the volume of spam calls on WhatsApp in view of the surge. Of course , it is more important for us as users to be aware of such problems.

WhatsApp has around 2 billion users worldwide. Out of that, 40 crore people use WhatsApp in India alone. More than any other country in the world and more than any other social media in India!
On the other hand, WhatsApp users in India have very little awareness about online safety. As a result, not hackers , but simple fraudsters get a free rein on WhatsApp.
After the introduction of WhatsApp UPI based payment system, the company has increased security features in it. The UPI system itself is safe , but our mistakes , especially in WhatsApp, can make its use costly.
Whether you are using UPI in WhatsApp or not , here are the steps to be sure to stay safe from various ways of cheating us. Below are some such steps.
To prevent unknown calls
As the company takes some steps to prevent calls from unknown numbers , we can also take some steps. As per the screenshot on the side, go to Settings in WhatsApp , turn on ' Silence Unknown Callers ' in Privacy . In this way, the call from an unknown number will not be stopped , but the ring will not ring , so the possibility of picking up the call by mistake will be reduced.

Keep the view settings personal
We can decide who can see our things in WhatsApp. For that, go to the privacy section in WhatsApp settings. Here the settings of ' Who can see my personal info ' are important. In it, you can select ' Nobody ' for both ' Last Scene ' and ' When I'm Online ' settings . By doing that we won't be able to see other people's last scenes and when they were online , but it doesn't make a big difference. Similarly, instead of showing your profile photo , about status , read receipts, etc. from here, it is desirable to set it so that only people you know well can see it.
Turn on two-step verification
Like other online accounts, two-step verification can be enabled in WhatsApp too. This makes our account and the data in it more secure.
Enabling two-step verification in WhatsApp makes the process more secure when re-registering our account in a new device.
This system is not for everyday use , so don't think that you have to go through the hassle of entering the PIN when you open the WhatsApp app.
WhatsApp will only ask for your PIN occasionally , so that it remembers it. While setting the PIN we have to provide our email address with the help of which , if the PIN is forgotten, it can be reset.
Let's use fingerprint lock
This setting also does not give us any protection against calls from unknown numbers or dangerous links from a person or group , although it is useful. Locking your WhatsApp account with your fingerprint is imperative when you want to keep your WhatsApp chats private from others or use UPI payments in them. An option for the same can be found at the bottom of the privacy section in WhatsApp settings.
Keep in mind that this will not prevent you from receiving audio or video calls on WhatsApp. One has to unlock the app with fingerprint while opening it just to read the messages.
Block and report contacts
WhatsApp gives us the facility to report certain contact numbers as objectionable and block them. If you are receiving frequent , completely useless WhatsApp messages or calls from an unknown number, open the chat or call page with that contact. Click on the three dots and select Report and Block options simultaneously. All the numbers we have blocked can be seen under Blocked Contacts in the Privacy section of WhatsApp's settings. We can also unblock it whenever we want. Unsolicited callers will continue to call from different numbers , but this will help the company to prevent calls from blocked and reported numbers.
