Look carefully at the adjacent screenshots. It shows the condition of Bakhmat City and its surroundings in war-torn Ukraine. The pink part shows how Russian forces gradually besieged and captured Bakhmat City, Ukraine . These screenshots are actually an example of how technology is being used in warfare today , but it also gives us a chance to dig a little deeper into the interesting concept of ' timelapse maps ' !

Talking about these screenshots, after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the Russian forces started rampaging the city to capture Bakhmat City in Ukraine. See the status difference between the three dates in the screenshot. In the first screenshot, the city is being invaded from only one side. While in the second screenshot, the Russian forces have surrounded the city from three sides and have occupied that part. The third screenshot is from April 18 when Russian forces took full control of the city.

' Institute for the Study of War ' (https://www.understandingwar.org/) based in Washington City, USA An organization called has been creating a timelapse map of various parts of Ukraine since Russia invaded Ukraine. With the help of these maps, one can get a clear picture of how the situation is changing in the war!

You must know about timelapse videos. In this type of video, long-term changes in a subject are captured in video form. And then the speed of that video is increased significantly and it is played. For example, in the early morning in the garden, we can see the whole process of a bud blossoming into a full flower in just half a minute as a timelapse video. Similarly, we can see the construction process of a skyscraper taking shape in a few months in a 5-7 minute timelapse video.

This is the same concept as a timelapse map , but it is often used to examine how different parts of the Earth have changed over time. In Google Earth Services, we can see - at a glance - how a section of the Sabarmati riverbank in Ahmedabad looked before the riverfront development and how it is now with the help of this technique. Similarly, a timelapse map can be seen of how a project of huge hotels and villas has developed along the seafront in Dubai. Timelapse maps also provide an opportunity to see how much forest cover is increasing or decreasing in different parts of the Earth.

If you are interested, do a little search on how to view typelapse maps in Google Earth on PC , Android or iPhone. A lot of new things to learn!
