The government tightened the grip on social media even more

In India, the government and social media have long been at loggerheads over freedom to publish content and government control over it. For a few years now the Indian government has started imposing restrictions on social media and now last week India's IT Act has been amended once again. Accordingly, Facebook , Twitter and other social media shall not publish or host any false or misleading information regarding the working of the Government. Before publishing any such information, the social media companies have to check the authenticity of the information with the help of fake check unit set up by the government. It is natural that social media is protesting against this new provision. As India is a huge market for companies like Facebook , Twitter and Google, it is obvious that any kind of restrictions would be harsh on them. But in addition to this, organizations like Journalists and Editors Guild of India have also raised objections. According to all of them, this provision will threaten press freedom in India.
