Drones to be used for delivery of medicines in Meghalaya

Various states of India are moving more and more towards the use of drones. India Post in Gujarat is exploring the possibility of using drones for mail delivery and the Gujarat government has also initiated various training courses related to drones. Meanwhile, there is news that the use of drones for health services has been started in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya. In a district in the Garo range west of Meghalaya, the task of delivering medicines to primary health centers was difficult. But starting this month there has been an initiative to deliver supplies of medicines , vaccines and other essential materials with the help of drones. For this, a special drone station has been developed in the largest city of the western part of Meghalaya , which is India's first drone station designed specifically for healthcare use.

After India's Ministry of Civil Aviation significantly eased regulations related to the use of drones in 2021, various states have become more aware of the use of drones. Due to the drone delivery system in Meghalaya, around 18.5 thousand people in 55 villages can be provided faster health services. 7 out of these 55 villages are accessible only by foot. The drone station will deliver medical supplies to a total of 25 primary health centres. For this, five to eight drone flights are likely to be operated daily.

If the initial operation is successful, there are plans to expand the drone service to the entire state of Meghalaya, as about 79 percent of Meghalaya's population lives in rural and hilly areas!
