Climate change: Fresh water demand increases, river valley system will change, startling fact

New delhi date. 26 November 2022, Saturday

If the glaciers located in the high Himalayan areas of the state melt faster in the future due to climate change, it may have serious consequences. Future planning will be done from now on to deal with this problem. Rapidly melting glaciers will change entire ecosystems of lowland river basins, while demand for fresh water continues to rise.

A stakeholder meeting on glacio-hydrological modeling and IWRM planning for the Bhagirthi basin and its sub-basins was held on Friday by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). SDC is working on 'Strengthening Climate Change and Adaptation in the Himalayas (SCA-Himalaya) Project' during 2020-24. It also includes state directorate of environment protection and climate change.

In the meeting, the officials emphasized that the demand for water in all sectors including agriculture, industrial and domestic will increase in the future. So to maintain its continuity, scientific aspects have to be considered from now on. The Himalayas are the largest source of water availability in the country, but its glaciers are melting rapidly due to climate change. For this, all the Himalayan states need to work on Integrated Water Resource Management from now on.

In this meeting, IFS SP Subudhi, Neena Grewal, Executive Director, State Disaster Management Authority Dr. Piyush Rautela, Deputy Head SDC Divya Sharma, Team Leader Riddhima Sood, THDC DGM AK Singh, NIH Scientist Sanjay Jain, CWC SE Rajesh Kumar, were present. Sudmana Girish Joshi, Rahul Jugran etc were present.
