NASA discovered a unique island with a growing shape

The US space agency NASA has spotted a small island in the south-west Pacific Ocean, hours after a volcano erupted near Australia. Earlier this month, the Home Reef volcano on the central island of Tonga began spewing lava, ash and smoke. Due to which the color of the surrounding water changed. But according to NASA's Earth Monitoring Workshop, a new island appeared on the surface of the water only 11 hours after the eruption. Satellite images of the island have also been taken in this monitoring workshop.

According to NASA, this newly formed island soon grew in size. On 13 September, researchers with the Geological Survey of Tonga estimated the island's area to be 4000 square meters, or about 1 acre, and its height to be 10 meters (about 33 feet) above sea level.

The size of the island has increased to 24000 square meters or about 6 acres on September 20, the researchers informed.

According to the US space agency, this new island has formed above the Home Reef seamount in central Tonga Island. But it was also said that this little island might not stay here forever.

NASA has stated that "the island is formed by submerged volcanoes and such islands only exist for a short period of time. Sometimes they last for many years."

A 12-day eruption of the nearby Late'iki Volcano created an island in 2020, but it was washed away within two months, according to NASA. While in 1995, the island formed due to the Aaj volcano remained for 25 years.
