See where folders are backed up in the Photos app

Do you have both a separate PhotoGallery app and Google Photos app on your phone ? Both offer almost the same function in terms of storing photos and videos in the phone. If you want to view photos only, you can use either of them. If you have set automatic backup to your Google account in Google Photos, then the photos taken from the phone's camera and stored in the camera folder will be automatically backed up , but the WhatsApp or other apps media folder in the phone will not be backed up. That's good in a way , because all the rest of the WhatsApp photos you've downloaded and , read again, will be credited to your Google account. No more free unlimited storage in Google Photos.

So in the Photos , WhatsApp folder there is a horizontal line mark on the cloud and make sure it is not backed up! Yes , you can open the WhatsApp folder in the Photos app , select the desired photo from it , and upload it to the Photos account whenever you want.
