- No such proposal is under consideration with the Ministry of Electronics and IT

New delhi date. 11 August 2022, Thursday

An important clarification has come amid reports that the Modi government may ban cheap Chinese smartphones priced below Rs 12,000 in the country to promote local companies and curb Chinese companies.

According to a senior government official, there are no plans to ban Chinese companies from the smartphone market. No such proposal is under consideration by the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

It is worth mentioning that, even though many kinds of incentives and discounts are available in the name of Make in India, Indian domestic companies have not been able to capture the local smartphone market. Many Indian companies are finding it difficult to survive due to intense competition from Chinese companies.

Dominance of Chinese companies

According to a recent report by market tracker Counterpoint, in the quarter to June 2022, smartphones priced below $150 contributed to a third of India's total smartphone market sales volume, with Chinese companies accounting for 80%.
