Curb on the discretion of tech companies, Android-iPhone will come with a single charger
- If India does not insist on such a change, then there is also a possibility of such products being dumped here
New delhi date. 10 August 2022, Wednesday
The government is considering adopting a common charger for various devices including smartphones and tablets. According to a senior official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the Ministry has decided to consider this. A meeting has been held with the industry on 17th August. The meeting will discuss the problem of implementing one charger for all electronic devices. Other organizations including mobile manufacturers have been invited to that meeting.
Get rid of the hassle of multiple chargers
According to the official, a plan is being made to put a complete stop to the system of many types of chargers that are being seen so far. Due to this, 'e-waste' will also decrease. Notably, recently the European Union has asked to enforce a rule to adopt one USB-C port for small electronic devices by 2024. This type of plan is also being made in America.
Customers will benefit
The official said that companies in Europe and America can provide such services, then why can't they do so in India? Portable devices like smartphones and tablets should only require a common charger. If India does not insist on such changes, there is also a possibility that such products may be dumped here. Currently, because of this, customers have to buy a new charger separately every time they buy a new device.
Apple will be the most affected
If the government implements this policy, Apple will be most affected because it uses Lightning cables in its smartphones. Also it doesn't even provide a charger in the box with the iPhone and a major source of its revenue is the sale of chargers. In that case, if Type-C or any other charging point is common, the business of the company will be affected.
There will be only 2 types of charging ports
Now is the time, the official said, to start working on a framework for just two types of charging points. Meaning, one charging port for use in small and medium sized devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets, earbuds, speakers. While the second is used in feature phones.
