Could dexamethasone have prevented the deaths of 5,000 corona patients in Britain?
London, June 19, 2020, Friday
The coronavirus is spreading around the world. Many countries around the world have lifted lockdowns or corona emergencies to avoid damage to the economy, but corona positive cases continue to grow. Although no specific drug or vaccine for corona has been found, some allopathic remedies for treatment have been in constant debate.
Dexamethasone is added to this list after hydroxychloroquine. Dexamethasone is a very old drug used in asthma and rheumatism. No one would have thought that such an old format drug would be discussed to cure the Covid-19 disease caused by Corona virus. Researchers at the University of Oxford in Britain are hoping for a cure for Covid-19. Scientists have long been using any drug that is available in the market for Covid-19.
The experiment was performed on 11,500 Kovid-19 patients in 175 hospitals in Britain, including 2104 patients who were given 6 mg of dexamethasone for 10 days, while another 4,321 patients were not given the drug. Based on this experiment, it was proved that giving dexamethasone can reduce the mortality rate. Severe patients usually have to be given artificial respiration with the help of a ventilator for breathing. Patients placed on a ventilator have the highest mortality rate after 28 days.
A study from the University of Oxford found that giving dexamethasone along with those on a ventilator reduced the mortality rate by one-third. Patients who only had a lack of oxygen and did not need a ventilator were 20 to 25 percent less likely to die. It is believed that one in 8 critically ill patients with Covid-19 can be saved with dexamethasone. However, it is also interesting to note that there is no need to give dexamethasone to patients who recover from primary treatment in a hospital. This drug only benefits patients on a ventilator who are suffering from severe symptoms.
British researchers believe that at least 5,000 lives could have been saved if dexamethasone had been used early in the corona outbreak. This old and prevalent medicine is affordable to the poor as it is cheaper than other medicines. The cost of this medicine in ten days is only 500 rupees. Dr. Tedros of the World Health Organization, who is originally from Ethiopia, has congratulated the results of the claim, the researchers and the patients who have recovered. Dexamethasone experiments have also been hoped for in Britain, but German pandemic experts are still skeptical that they will react to the discovery. The recovery report of this study has not been released so the experts are not in a position to conduct independent research.
