It is very popular among users but in the meantime police has issued a warning about namedrop.

Several police agencies in America have issued a warning

Several police and agencies across the US have issued warnings about namedrops, including the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Carmi Police Department, Middletown Police Department, Watertown City Police Department, Jefferson Hills Police Department and Fort Smith Police Department. Police have issued this alert regarding security and privacy.

Namedrop feature is automatically activated in iOS 17

A social media user has claimed that when they updated their iPhone to iOS 17, the NameDrop feature was activated automatically. As soon as they come in contact with another iPhone, the NameDrop feature is activated and contacts start sharing. In such a situation, the police has issued a warning especially for parents, because a large number of children are using iPhones.

What is Apple's Namedrop feature?

Apple has released Namedrop with iOS 17. Namedrop works with Near Field Communication (NFC) in iPhones. To share files using Namedrop, both iPhones have to be brought close and the phones have to be unlocked. You can also turn off NameDrop by going to the phone's settings. If you don't want it turned on by default, go to the iPhone's Settings, select AirDrop from General Settings, and then turn it off.
