Adobe has dominated the desktop publishing space for years and has had almost no serious competition outside of programs like CorelDraw and QuarkXpress. But a European company called Serif changed this situation to some extent. A few years ago, it launched software like PagePlus , PhotoPlus , DesignerPlus , etc., providing convenience to Adobe InDesign , Photoshop , Illustrator, etc.

But at that time, Serif's programs were very weak compared to Adobe's. The company then recoded these programs and launched three programs , Affinity Designer , Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher. All three programs can be purchased for Windows , Mac and iPad. Even those who have been using Adobe's programs for years agree that these three Affinity programs are very close to Adobe's programs now in terms of features and performance. Of course the use of affinity programs is limited to desktop or iPad. It can't be used in a browser like Canva and it also doesn't support teamwork. Every other company or software mentioned on this page is almost decades old. Canva is the only service that was born after social media became very popular. Another feature of this Australian based company is that it is completely internet based!

Almost all of the desktop publishing or designing software that was available before the advent of Canva were paid programs, and using them required a lot of programming skills in addition to designing. Currently one of the top startups in the world by market value, Canva has changed the entire designing game. Anyone can design anything from visiting cards , flyers , social media posts , presentations , videos, etc. by opening their free account on Canva . Even if you don't know any designing or DTP skills, working in Canva is easy.

Canva offers a number of ready-to-use templates as a designing platform. It also provides many fonts , design elements , stock images , video footage and audio files. It has also added features for preparing resumes , presentations and documents, in competition with Microsoft. The fun thing about Canva is that its free account lets you work in a team, with some limitations. Buy the Pro version or the Teams version of Canva to get unlimited free tools. Of course the Pro version can only be used by one person , while the Teams version allows multiple people to work on the same design from different locations. This means that Canva is a smart new-age designing platform in every way.

When it comes to pagemaking, i.e. designing the pages of a newspaper , magazine or newsletter, programs like Adobe's PageMaker and Quark Express once dominated. As mentioned earlier, even though the PageMaker program has been discontinued for a long time, we still have old versions of it used for book designing. Similarly we have Coreldraw program very popular there.

This program is actually for creating vector designs. It can create logos or artwork for leaflets , brochures, etc. very nicely , but CorelDraw is not the right program for work that contains a lot of text. However we see CorelDraw being used more for bookwork too and printers insisting on getting its own file!

The Adobe company adopted a monthly or subscription model for its software , but these companies lagged behind in adopting such a model. Their permanent licenses are very expensive , which only design agencies or media houses can afford and even then they have to pay a separate fee for updates every year. Because of all this , programs like CorelDraw and Quark Express, while powerful, have of course fallen behind today's new generation of designers.

What Canva has today among non-techy people is Adobe's place among tax savvy and professional designers! The problem is that Adobe's current programs are very expensive. All of Adobe's services are now available on a monthly or annual subscription, and Adobe charges almost as much per month for its Total Creative Suite as it costs for a full year for the Pro version of Canva! Against this, Adobe company also gives so much value. The beauty of its program and all that is possible is still a long way off in Canva.

While Adobe's programs are extremely powerful, their biggest problem is that they are still desktop-based. In a cloud account, our folders and files can be synced and different people can work on them , but not more than one person can work on a file at the same time. This is a major hindrance in today's work-from-anywhere era. That's why Adobe has launched a service called Adobe Express to compete with Canva.

All the designing softwares mentioned so far are very easy to work in English. But when it comes to working in Gujarati , Hindi or other Indian languages, all these programs have different deposit-borrowing aspects. Microsoft's programs support Unicode very well, so we can expect Unicode support in its Designer programs. Since Canva is a completely cloud and browser based program, it does not support Indian languages ​​in the free version. Custom fonts can be added to the Pro version. Adobe programs did not have Unicode support until recently. Hence, if you want to work in Gujarati or Hindi, you have to buy paid , proprietary programs like Srilipi , India separately. Adobe's programs now support Unicode fonts very well , making it very easy to work with Indic languages.

Same goes for CoralDraw. It didn't have Unicode support until a while ago , now it does. As for Affinity's programs, they are very cheap and powerful , but lack Unicode support. Therefore, if you want to work in Indian languages, you have to buy a paid program like Srilipi Next. Even then fast typing in Indian languages ​​is not possible in Affinity's programs.
