How to partition laptop hard disk?

Now desktops are slowly being forgotten for personal use. Laptops have come close to desktops both in terms of performance and price so obviously people are starting to prefer laptops.

Earlier, when there was a trend of buying a desktop, mostly we used to go to a well-known computer engineer or a nearby computer shop and decide the configuration of the desktop with the help of the knowledgeable person there , and get the computer assembled accordingly. At that time , in addition to ' C ' drive, additional drives like ' D ' and ' F ' were already found in our computers. Because the engineer who assembled the computer himself used to make partitions in the hard disk of the desktop.

Now we all have shifted towards buying branded laptops. Most of these laptops don't have partitions on the hard disk , so when you go to the ' This PC ' section in File Explorer , you'll see only the ' C ' drive. Can only run from C drive , but partitioning has advantages.

You can get this work done by a well-known engineer or if you have the enthusiasm to do it yourself, it is not very difficult.

Why partition should be done ?

If the hard disk has only one C drive, then the operating system of the computer and other important files are installed in it , along with it, we have to create a new folder to store the files of our daily work.

As a result, all the important files for the computer and for us are stored in a single C drive. It is considered correct to invest all the money of our savings only in the stock market and that too in only one sector or company! If there is a recession in one sector or if one company goes down, we all go down together.

Therefore, instead of saving all the important files in the computer in one C drive, they should be partitioned in the hard disk and stored in different ways.

The main advantage of this is that if something goes wrong with the computer and the computer engineer says that the laptop needs to be formatted, when the C drive is erased, there is a risk of erasing all our important files from it. Engineers usually take care to back up , but the risk remains.

If we don't back up important files properly, all the files can be completely lost. Instead, if there is an operating system in the C drive and the rest of the files are in the D drive, then everything can be different and when the laptop is formatted, the files in the C drive will be deleted , everything in the D drive will be safe!

How to partition a drive ?

If your laptop has only one C drive, we can partition it manually. The work is easy , but some care is required. After this we can get D in addition to C and even more separate drives if needed.

This can be done in two ways: using the Disk Manager feature included in Windows or using third-party software. Let's learn how to partition a drive with the convenience included in Windows. Before proceeding make a proper backup of all data in the drive for safety.

After that , Windows key + R in the laptop Press the key. This will open the Run utility of Windows. In it diskmgmt.msc Type and press OK.

This will open the list of all hard drives in the computer. It will be visible if the computer has only C drive (if your laptop has another drive besides C, this way you can make more partitions of the second drive).

Let's assume that our laptop has only C drive. So click on the C drive and select it and then right click with the mouse. Select the Shrink Volume option in the menu that opens . Basically , we reduce the total space allocated to the C drive in the harddisk and make room for another drive.

At this stage , check how much free space is currently available in the C drive. Also taking into account if more programs are to be installed in the future , the remaining space can be allocated to the new drive.

Now we will be asked how much you want to shrink the drive. Whatever number we enter will give us enough space for the new drive.

Now clicking the shrink button will open a new box below the window. It will show how much data we have shrunk and ' unallocated ' for it . Right-click it , select the “New Simple Volume” option in the menu that opens . After that we can select a letter like ' D ' for this new drive and format the new partition. It is about laptop hard disk so we format this NTFS . Have to choose.

Our work is done. Now the computer will see a new drive in addition to C. Programs already installed in C will remain unchanged and we can save our work files in the newly created drive!

Can also run from just C drive without partition, like this..

Once upon a time there was a demand for maximum storage in a laptop/PC , now if your use is enough for office files and if you have a good net connection, you can work with just 250 GB of storage in the laptop, again if it is of SSD type, then the speed is also good!

All we need to do is store our files in the cloud and use a laptop to access those files – thereby maintaining automatic and regular backups of important files.

If your laptop has a regular , good speed internet connection then you should take advantage of the facility of ' Google Drive for Desktop ' or Microsoft ' OneDrive ' . If Windows operating system is already installed in the laptop, there will be a folder named ' OneDrive-Personal ' . If you log into your laptop with a Microsoft account instead of a local account and store all your work files in this OneDrive-personal, all those folders and all the files in them are automatically synced with your Microsoft account i.e. in the cloud. The biggest advantage of this is that when the laptop has an internet connection, our files are uploaded to the cloud and we can access those files in any other device (laptop , PC or smartphone etc.) by logging in with a Microsoft account.

Free account in OneDrive offers 5 GB of space. If you subscribe to it, you can get one TB of space and the latest Microsoft Office programs according to the plan. If more space is required in the free account, ' Google Drive for Desktop ' can be used. It offers up to 15 GB of free storage. By going to the Google Drive website and installing this software, Google Drive will be added to the laptop and all the folders and files stored in this drive will be backed up to your cloud account just like OneDrive and can be accessed anytime , anywhere!
