Cyber Security Risk From Twitter, Chinese Intelligence Was Also An Employee: Jetco Claims
Washington, Dt. 14 September 2022, Wednesday
Twitter's former security chief told the US Congress on Tuesday that the social media platform is grappling with poor cybersecurity, privacy risks and an inability to control millions of fake accounts. Renowned cyber security expert Peter M Jetko appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to plead his case. He said Twitter had misled the public, lawmakers and regulators, and that the platform was more than a decade behind the industry's best benchmarks.
Twitter cannot protect users' data
He said, what data do they have, where is it and where does it come from. Surprisingly it cannot protect him. "This is a big deal for all of us," Jetko said. If there is no lock then it does not matter who has the key.
Twitter knowingly allowed the Indian government to keep its agents in the company
He alleged that Twitter's leadership ignored this aspect because its executives prioritized profits over security. In the suit, which attracted the attention of MPs on Tuesday, Jetco also said that Twitter knowingly allowed the Indian government to keep its agents in the company. Where they had access to extremely sensitive data of users. Jetko claimed that he was speaking with high confidence about a foreign agent the Indian government had placed on Twitter to understand the talks between India's ruling party and Twitter about the new social media restrictions and how well those talks were going.
'At least one agent' of the Chinese intelligence service MSS was a Twitter employee
He revealed on Tuesday that, before he was fired, 'at least one agent' of the Chinese intelligence service MSS, or Ministry of National Security, was a Twitter employee.
Jetco's claims cause more uproar
He filed a whistleblower complaint with Congress, the Justice Department, the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission in July. Their most serious allegation is that Twitter violated the terms of a 2011 FTC settlement and falsely claimed that it took robust measures to protect the security and privacy of its users. The chairman of the Judiciary Committee and Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, said JETCO has detailed information about flaws that could directly threaten millions of Twitter users and American democracy. Jetco's claims could also influence Tesla owner Elon Musk's efforts to back out of a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter.
