Today is 20th July. 53 years ago today in 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. He hoisted the American flag on the moon and returned after spending three hours there. There are still questions about the veracity of this claim by the American NASA , but the fact that humans have made tremendous progress in space in the last five decades cannot be denied in any way.

Sometimes you also look at the moon from the earth and think that what is really on the earth of the moon ?! Almost everyone has the curiosity to peer into the vast universe spread around us. The problem is that if we live in a city and look at the sky from Agashi, we will see nothing but a very bright star. If you live in a village and also in a farm or when you go out of the city, if you stop for a while on the highway other than a hotel or a petrol pump, you will get a thin estimate of how many stars there will be in the black Dibang sky.

Light pollution in cities is a major obstacle to viewing the night sky. But technology also provides a solution for that. If we have a good telescope, we can cross the light barrier and make many holes in the sky.

This is now possible even if there is no telescope and only a computer or a smartphone in hand. With the help of a free software called 'Stellarium ' , website and its apps !

Gujarat has planetariums in Ahmedabad , Surat , Vadodara , Rajkot , Porbandar etc cities (have you ever been ?!). Planetarium also known as ' Taramandir ' houses night sky viewing inside an enclosed theatre. Of course, if we have gone on a school trip or have ever gone to a planetarium with our family, we can't get anything more than the joy of seeing something new in the half hour show. Alternatively, if we have such a planetarium handy in our own computer or smartphone, we can dive into it whenever we get the chance and slowly learn a lot.

The government has provided computers and big screens to many of our real schools. Now one needs to think about how to use that hardware properly and fully. If a school science teacher is really enthusiastic, download a free software called ' Stellarium ' in the school computer and then take the students on an exciting journey to the sky when they get the chance. can go Instead of teaching astronomy only with the help of a textbook, the way the moon or different planets can be seen with the help of binoculars or a telescope , similarly, if everything is shown to the students on the big screen of the computer, their curiosity and horizons of knowledge can expand a lot. Need enthusiasm!

Stellarium is a fun software developed by just two guys. It started as a hobby in 2001 at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Its original purpose was to spread knowledge, so it was opened as ' Open Source Software ' .

This means that anyone can download this software absolutely free, give it to others as well as get its source code and develop it in their own way.

Currently we can use Stellarium in three main ways.

1) Download the complete software in the computer and install it and use it in the computer itself (see http://stellarium.org/).

2) Go directly to https://stellarium-web.org in browser on any computer or mobile with good net connection and use it. In this method we don't need to install anything.

3) By downloading Stellarium App in Android or iPhone or Tablet.

Among these three methods, software downloaded to the computer is the most powerful. According to experts in this subject, the web version of Stellarium also has some bugs. Similarly, when we use it as an app, we have to pay for its many powerful features.

Keeping all this in mind, it would be better to understand its use only in the web version of Stellarium at first and then download the software if you are more interested. Especially for use in school, if the teacher himself understands the use of this software properly and then downloads the software and shows the sky to the students with the help of it, then the software can be fully benefited.

We can know the computer requirements to install it from the Stellarium website and download the user manual for use after installation.

Even the web version may not make sense at first , but the following information will help you get going.

For now let's understand using the web version of Stellarium. For that we don't need to install anything in computer or mobile. Just open a browser and go to https://stellarium-web.org website.

The website will be opened and we will see a view on the screen as if we are meeting from the earth in the sky. If you visited this website during the day, the sky would appear light and almost empty. Now first click on the button showing location on the bottom left side of the screen. Here either the default location will be shown as Paris, France or it may be written as ' Unknown ' . This website tries to automatically set our location according to our IP address. If that doesn't work, we can set it by searching our own location by clicking on the button.

After that , according to our location, exactly what the sky will look like at that time will be seen on the screen.

Now try to rotate the sky on the screen a little with the help of mouse or finger. As you can see we can change our view point.

Now click on the clock that appears on the far right side of the screen. From here we can see the sky at different times of the day and night. From here we can also change the date. As you can see there is a play button between the date and time. By clicking on it, one can see the changing position in the sky in real time every second. Of course this is a very slow process so we can speed up the time using the slider below the date and time. The left and right side of the slider shows the time of day in blue color , while the middle section shows the night time.

Now let's talk about the buttons that are found towards the bottom of the screen.

By clicking on the first icon, we can see different constellations in the sky (a star cluster , a constellation , the most familiar example for us , Saptarishi , made up of seven stars!).

Different shapes are also imagined in Greek mythology for these constellations formed according to the different positions of the stars. By clicking on the second icon, these shapes of constellations can be seen in the sky in art form. A science teacher can explain all this better.

The next button is Atmosphere. By clicking it we can see the clear clear sky without any obstacle of atmosphere.

While watching all this, if you keep zooming in or zooming out with the mouse and changing the day and night with the help of the slider, everything will be seen and understood better. The fourth button is Landscape. With its help, we can feel like standing on the earth and looking at the sky or lying on the ground and only the sky is visible above. The next two buttons are about turning on and off the two types of grids on Earth.

The next button is for viewing deep sky objects. After that , if you are doing Akash darshan in tablet or laptop, night mode can be turned on with this button at night when you take it to Agashi. The last button is for turning on fullscreen mode.

Now turn off all the buttons on the screen. Hence Venus , Uranus , Jupiter , Saturn etc. planets and other stars can be seen in the sky according to your location and time . Zoom over any of them with the mouse. Hence, you can feel like you are looking at Saturn or any other planet through the telescope. Clicking on that planet will open a box showing information related to it. For example, if you have zoomed in on Saturn or Saturn, the entire planet including the rings of Saturn can be seen very closely. More information about Saturn can be found in the box opened on the side.

In this article we have got only a basic introduction to Stellarium software or website. If your child or student has a keen interest in astronomy, as a parent or teacher you can find many different articles or videos about Stellariums on the internet. In the beginning, downloading the software directly or going to the web version will make almost no sense, but if you start a few steps based on the various information provided in this article, then you will be able to go deep into the sky - all the best!
