Can apples from a cold region like Kashmir be grown at 40 degrees?
Srinagar, June 12, 2020, Tuesday
The greenery of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh comes to mind as soon as the name apple is mentioned. This crop of cold region cannot tolerate heat at all. The inventor scientist KC Sharma claimed that he has been able to grow apples in many parts of the country but this variety of apple can withstand temperatures up to 40 degrees. Apples were cultivated in the hilly areas of Kashmir but even in the high temperatures of Jammu, good apple production can be taken. An apple tree usually bears one quintal of fruit.
Normally, if the temperature rises above 40 degrees, the quality of apples deteriorates, but the newly discovered variety will produce at more than double the temperature. The local Kandi area of Samba is surrounded by drinking water problem so there is not enough water even for agriculture. In such circumstances farming becomes a challenge. Temperatures also remain high during the summer. This variety of apple has survived despite the adverse environment for the apple crop.
Apples of different varieties from Kashmir and Himachal are in demand during the season. In areas where apples are not grown, apples have to be bought at exorbitant prices in the local fruit market. People do not hesitate to buy apples at high prices as they are good for health. If apples from cold regions like Kashmir and Himachal can be grown even in temperate regions like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, it will be a revolution.
