ICMR's explanation: Now men can also take contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancy, know from research how successful this test is

Male contraceptive: Until now only women used contraceptive pills to avoid unwanted pregnancy, now men can also prevent unwanted pregnancy by consuming contraceptives. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has been conducting research on male contraception for the last 7 years. From which it is known that RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm under Guidance) is a safe and effective way to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Risag is a non-hormonal injectable contraceptive. Which has been proven successful in preventing pregnancy.

Research done for testing

According to the open-label and non-randomized phase-3 results of the International Open Access Journal Andrology, the research involved 303 healthy men aged 25 to 40 years. In which these men were given an injection of 60 ml of Risg. In which he was able to prevent pregnancy for a long time.

What does the Ministry of Health say about Risag?

A study by the Ministry of Health found that some men experienced side effects such as fever, swelling and urinary tract infections after injections of Risg, but recovered within a few weeks to three months. The research revealed that this injection was successful in preventing pregnancy up to 99.02 percent. Also, no serious side effects were observed in men and women after consuming this injection.

The trial lasted 40 years

IIT Kharagpur Dr. Risg is developed by Sujoy Kumar Guha. Dr. Sujoy published the first scientific paper on Risg in 1979 in the journal Contraception. It took almost 40 years to complete the phase-3 trial of this contraceptive. Hospital-based research was conducted at five centers in Jaipur, Delhi, Udhampur, Kharagpur and Ludhiana.

What does the research say?

Risg injections achieved 97.3 percent azoospermia, a medical term that indicates no active sperm present in the semen. An injection of Risg is injected into the sperm tube. After this, the polymer present in it sticks to the inner wall of the tube. So that pregnancy can be stopped. The research also observed the health of the wives of the participants and found that there were no adverse effects on them.

How does Risg work?

RisgA is based on injecting a polymeric agent called styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) into the sperm tube via dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The sperm cells reach the private parts from the testicles through the sperm tube. First, anesthesia is administered where the testicles are to be injected. Risg is then injected into the first and then the second sperm tube respectively. Once injected, the polymer adheres to the walls of the sperm tube and renders the sperm sterile. So pregnancy can be prevented.

A revolutionary change for women

Currently, the contraceptive pills that women consume to prevent pregnancy, disrupt their hormonal balance and also adversely affect their health. Scientists believe that the advent of mail birth control will have a positive impact on women's health and their lives by not placing the sole responsibility of contraception on women.
