We may have seen many vehicles plying on the road, which would be of different colors, but the color of a school bus would always be the same, it would be yellow. Have you ever wondered why school buses are yellow and not red or blue? The answer to this question is related to science. But before knowing this answer, know whose idea it was to make the bus yellow.
At a Columbia University conference, colors were taped to the wall and everyone chose a yellow-orange color together.
According to a report, yellowing of school buses started in America. Professor Frank Cyr of Columbia University's Teachers College began researching the nation's school transportation vehicles in the 1930s. There were then no specific criteria by which to determine the design of school vehicles, especially buses. He convened a special meeting for the safety of American school children, in which prominent teachers, transport officials, bus conductors, etc. from across the country participated. He pasted the colors on the wall of the conference room and asked people to choose. All together chose the yellow-orange color. Yellow was the dominant color in this and since then yellow has become the dominant color of school buses. All chose yellow because most eyes had the same color. Since then the practice of yellow colored buses started as it was safer.
The yellow color is easily visible to the eyes
Scientists also justified their choice because according to them yellow color is easily seen by the human eye. It is at the top of the visibility spectrum. This is because human eyes have photoreceptor cells called cones. The eyes have three types of cones that are designed to detect red, green, and blue colors. Yellow light affects both red and green cells simultaneously, making it more visible to the eyes.
