Popular media player suddenly banned in India

If you have been playing various types of media files on your computer then you must be familiar with ' VLC Media Player ' . This open source media player has been very popular among tech users over the years. Audio and video files can be stored in a variety of formats and the specialty of VLC media player is that it can play almost all types of media files. That's why when we buy an assembled computer from a nearby computer shop and the shop installs various software in the computer, one of them almost invariably includes this free VLC media player.

But now the Indian government has suddenly banned this popular software. VLC media player website and its download link have been blocked. Surprisingly, the company that developed this software itself is in the dark about the ban! After the news of the ban was shared on Twitter, the company tweeted back saying that it also " doesn't know about the reasons for the ban , the ban is actually in effect till February 2022. It would be nice if the users in India could shed some light on this! The government has not given any clear reason for the ban. But it has come out that a certain Russian or Chinese hacker group was using this popular software to inject malware into people's computers or smartphones and due to this the government has banned the software.
