Researchers are working to trick scammers into their own words

But with researchers at Sydney's Macquarie University working on an AI chatbot that can take scammers at their word, none of this would make sense. Basically it is designed in such a way that the dice will fall on the rogues themselves.

Apate is being given training

This chatbot is named Apate. In Greek mythology, the name is that of the goddess of deception. AI technology like ChatGPT is being used for this. This is combined with voice cloning, to create a dummy voice of a man, who can speak at length to the thug. Apate's training is being delivered through phone calls, emails and messages sent on social media by thugs.

Apate capable of simple conversation for up to 5 minutes

Professor Kafer says his team is developing this chatbot to be able to communicate for up to 40 minutes. Apate is currently able to hold simple conversations for up to 5 minutes. He says Apate is learning new things quickly.

Chatbots will shut down the business model of thugs

Professor Dali Kafer of Macquarie University says that our model wastes time by luring scammers into talking. If fraudsters continue to engage in such calls, their number of calls will also decrease and fraud cases will also decrease. Prof Kafer says these chatbots undermine the business model of scammers, making it harder for them to rob people.
