Artificial microplastics have been discovered by scientists near the South Pole

Plastic pollution in the Antarctic is now as bad as anywhere on Earth. Scientists have found artificial microplastics in air, seawater, sediment and ice near the South Pole. The Oxford University team found microplastics in air, seawater and sea ice in the Waddell Sea near the South Pole. This is a form of fibrous polyester, which originates from fabrics made from synthetic materials such as polyester and acrylic. Most of the microfibers were found in air samples, meaning Antarctic animals and seabirds could have inhaled them.
