NASA's Dart mission successful, spacecraft collides with asteroid on schedule


WASHINGTON, September 27, 2022, Tuesday

NASA's Dart mission to save Earth from an asteroid has been successful. Today Tuesday at 4.44 am according to Indian time, the Dart spacecraft collided with a small asteroid named Dimorphos. Koi was the first test to defend Earth against a planet that was successful. With this, the American space agency NASA has created a new record.

Dart mission coordinator lead Nancy Chabot said the spacecraft targeted the asteroid very well. The purpose of this mission was to check whether the spacecraft would be impacted by an asteroid passing close to Earth's orbit. The American space agency NASA was behind this experiment at a cost of 330 million dollars.


A spacecraft is deliberately set up to collide with an asteroid from a spacecraft. The purpose of this experiment was to change the path of a space object coming towards the Earth. 4 million years ago, the dinosaurs that existed on Earth were destroyed by an asteroid impact. This success is important to protect the Earth from future collisions of such celestial bodies. Data from this asteroid redirection test is being studied.
