Mumbai, 09 August 2022, Tuesday

The country's largest telecom company Jio has completed planning for 5G coverage in top 1,000 cities and conducted field trials of indigenously developed 5G telecom equipment, Reliance Industries said in its annual report. In the report, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) said that Jio had taken massive steps during the year 2021-22 to prepare for the launch of 5G with its 100 percent indigenous technology. The company was the highest bidder in the recently concluded 5G spectrum auction. India's biggest-ever auction of telecom spectrum, which concluded on August 1 (Monday), fetched a record bid of Rs 1.5 lakh crore, with Mukesh Ambani's Jio bagging almost half of the airwaves sold.

"Jio's 5G coverage planning has been finalized based on targeted customer usage and revenue potential in top 1,000 cities," the report released on August 7 said. Reliance Jio was the top bidder and bid for 24,740 MHz airwaves in five bands capable of offering lag-free connectivity, nearly 10 times faster than 4G. 88,078 crore in total bid and Jio can enable billions of connected devices to share real-time data through the airwaves. Jio has also acquired the much-vaunted 700 MHz spectrum, which can provide a signal range of 6-10 kilometers with a single tower, and has laid a solid foundation for offering fifth generation (5G) services in all 22 circles or zones of the country.

Jio has also joined hands with Finland's University of Oulu – spearheading the world's first major 6G research program – to accelerate research and standardization in 6G. The company has conducted active trials of 5G use cases ranging from augmented reality, virtual reality, low-latency cloud gaming, network slicing and video delivery, TV streaming, multi-tenancy for connected hospitals and industrial applications. According to the Department of Telecom, 5G technology is expected to offer 10 times better download speeds and three times more spectrum efficiency than 4G.
