Astronomers discover new planet the size of Earth: named Pie Planet

Cambridge, Ta. Thursday 23 September 2020

Astronomers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, in collaboration with other astronomers, have discovered an Earth-sized planet in space. Astronomers have given this new planet a special name, Pie Planet.

According to astronomers, this new planet, which looks like Earth, completes one orbit around its parent star in just 3.14 days. This means that the new planet is orbiting very close to its parent star.

As a result, the planet's temperature could be as high as 450 Kelvin (350 Fahrenheit). We named it Pie Planet because it sounds so unrealistic.

In other words, this new planet seems to be reminiscent of the pie sign of mathematics. Some figures in mathematics are unrealistic or irrational.

This group of astronomers used data collected in 2017 by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope K2 mission.

In addition, they used information gathered by a group of telescopes called the Speculos on Earth. The signals that the scientists received revealed that the planet was orbiting a star. The details of this research have been published in the Astronomical Journal.

Prajwal Niraula, who is studying at MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), reported that the new planet revolved around its parent star clockwise (right to left). Rotates round.
